What We’ve Done
Political Campaigns:
During the presidential election, members of our organization spent hundreds of hours volunteering for Barack Obama and local candidates. Some of our members spent time volunteering in Missouri, South Dakota, and Iowa. After the election in November, our focus shifted to the Omaha city elections. During the Spring of 2009, we spent countless hours walking door-to-door, making phone calls, and a variety of other things for Mayor Jim Suttle and city council candidates.
Voter Registration:
In the Fall of 2004, the College Democrats teamed up with the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women FMLA, Amnesty International, and other organizations to register over 700 voters in Douglas County.
In the Media:
Members of our organization have been featured or quoted on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, the local NBC and ABC newscasts, the Omaha World-Herald, and many other news outlets.
Bush Protest
When President Bush visited Omaha to talk about Social Security, the College Democrats participated in a successful protest with over 300 people.
Buttons
The buttons we make help support our club, since we don’t make our members pay dues. In the past fall, we’ve made hundreds of new buttons related to health care, gay rights, and environmental issues. We have plenty to go around, so if you see us at a table, please stop by and help yourself to as many buttons as you’d like. They are $1 a piece or 6 buttons for $5!
Open Door Mission
This semester, our club has devoted time and effort towards volunteering at the Open Door Mission. We’ve helped arrange clothes, buff floors, and build shelves. We’ve enjoyed our time at the Open Door Mission greatly, and plan on making this a regular event for the group.
V-Day
The UNO College Democrats love SEX….safe sex, that is! Every year for Valentine’s Day, the members of our group pass out Valentines with free condoms attached to promote awareness about things like STDs, unplanned pregnancies, and safe sex. It is one of our favorite times of the year, and we always have a blast planning this event!
Katrina Relief Work
Every Spring Break, members of the UNO Democrats have spent a week in New Orleans doing relief work. Sponsored by West Hills Church of Omaha, members stay at lodging provided by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Katrina relief is something that remains very dear to our members, and we love going down to lend a hand every year. There is still lots of work to be done, and our hard-working members are devoted to return to continue helping.
Tribute to the Fallen
Tribute to the Fallen is the biggest event we put on each year. Each year the name, rank, military branch and age of each fallen serviceman and servicewoman is read. In 2009, this took place on Tuesday, April 14th and Thursday, April 16th. Wednesday, April 15th was a day of silence. A Closing Ceremony took place on Thursday, April 16th at 5PM. To learn more about Tribute, please visit the Tribute to the Fallen website.
